These contemporary copies of letters between Thomas Jefferson and James Madison and Sidi Suleiman Melli Melli, ambassador of Tunis to the United States were made for Tobias Lear, U.S. consul general to Algiers. The correspondents try to ameliorate a diplomatic crisis caused by the U.S. seizure of a Tunisian ship which tried to run a blockade of the Tripolitan harbor.
